Spare Press is a letterpress shop dedicated to keeping the centuries old traditions of this style printing alive. Everything from start to finish is done in house (with the exception of photopolymer plates). Design work is done by printer, Rob Beckstrom, who has been designing and printing anything he possibly can for over 25 years. Creating punk rock fanzines, flyers for shows, shirts and 7″ record covers in his youth sparked a flame that will burn on forever. His cut and paste art in the 90’s led him to eventually work with and interior designer, creating patterns for the home.Clients included Urban Outfitter, Macy’s, Target, Waterworks and many others. Because of his punk/DIY philosophies it wasn’t a good match, and he was not thrilled with his artwork adorning candles, dish ware and shower curtains and eventually went back to only working on small projects for fellow bands, close friends and family. He kept creating zines, greeting cards, flyers for shows and participating in underground art shows around the San Francisco Bay Area.

It wasn’t until late 2011 that a 10 x 15 Chandler & Price New Series press crossed his path while making his transition to the small town of Ukiah, California in the heart of Mendocino County. He had just finished letterpress printing classes at Foothill College and was ready to start printing professionally, for himself, in his own studio.

Here it is 2015 and Spare Press is growing at a rate Rob is proud of. There is a lot in store for Spare Press in the next few years, keep checking back for updates!
